The standard student approach to a Cloze Test is reading sentence 1, stopping at blank 1, looking at the four options, and guessing which word 'sounds right'.
This approach leads to traps. Examiners deliberately design options where 3 of the 4 words are grammatically valid in that single sentence, but only ONE aligns with the overall passage tone and logical trajectory.
Always read the complete passage from start to finish without looking at the options to grasp the main idea and tone before answering.
Collocations & Prepositional Pairings
Over 50% of Cloze Test blanks test fixed collocations—words that naturally pair together in English syntax:
- 'Adhere' pairs strictly with 'to' | 'Abide' pairs strictly with 'by'.
- 'Refrain' and 'Abstain' pair strictly with 'from'.
- 'Cope' pairs with 'with' (Never 'cope up with'!).
- 'Look forward to' is followed by a Gerund (V+ing), not a base verb.
Reading Comprehension: Question-First Scanning
In CBT exams, read the question stems first to identify keywords (proper nouns, years, specific technical terms). When reading the passage, your brain acts as a radar, highlighting the exact sentence containing the answer without getting bogged down in background details.
