Understanding the Revised CHSL Two-Tier Pattern
Since the pattern revision, SSC CHSL mirrors the structure of SSC CGL. Tier 1 serves as a qualifying screening test (100 questions, 200 marks, 60 minutes), while final merit is determined entirely by Tier 2 marks.
Tier 2 is divided into Section 1 (Math + Reasoning, 60 questions, 180 marks), Section 2 (English + General Awareness, 60 questions, 180 marks), and Section 3 (Qualifying Computer Knowledge & Skill Test).
Tier 1 qualification gets you through the gate, but Tier 2 marks decide your service allocation and posting.
Tier 1 Speed Conditioning: 60 Seconds per Question
Because Tier 1 is qualifying, your primary goal is reaching a safe cut-off buffer (typically 145-155 raw score depending on category).
Spend no more than 20 minutes on Quant, 15 on Reasoning, 10 on English, and 6 on GA, leaving 9 minutes for secondary review of marked questions.
Typing Test Strategy: Start on Day 1
The most tragic failure mode in SSC CHSL is scoring 310+ in Tier 2 and getting disqualified on the typing test. LDC and JSA posts require a typing speed of 35 words per minute (English) or 30 wpm (Hindi).
Dedicate 20 minutes daily from the very start of your preparation using touch-typing software rather than scrambling two weeks before the test.
- Target: 35 WPM with less than 7% error margin.
- Use standard desktop mechanical/membrane keyboards, not laptop chicklet keys.
- Practice with official previous year master texts.
